Urinary System Disorders and Long-Term Disability Benefits in Canada
The urinary system filters blood and eliminates waste from the body as urine. It regulates blood pH, volume, and pressure. It also controls the levels of essential electrolytes and metabolites in the body. Disorders of the urinary system can have life-threatening consequences, and may be caused by genetic and/or environmental factors.
If you or someone you love is unable to work as a result of a urinary system disorder, there may be financial support available through long-term disability (LTD) benefits. These benefits are intended to cover 60-70% of an individual’s regular income as they recover, or adjust to a new stability with their condition.
Whether you are beginning the process of filing an LTD claim, or have been denied coverage by your insurance provider, our team of long-term disability lawyers may be able to help. Contact us today to schedule a free initial consultation, and learn what we may be able to do for you.
What Is the Urinary System?
Made up of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra, the urinary system filters blood, eliminating waste and excess water in the form of urine. As our digestive system takes in food and drink, nutrients and water get processed through the small intestine and enter the bloodstream.
The kidneys process the bloodstream’s excess fluid, ensuring that liquid waste is expelled and that chemicals such as potassium and sodium are kept in balance within the body.
When the body breaks down protein, it creates the waste product urea. Ureas is formed in the liver, and passes to the kidneys through the bloodstream. The kidneys then process urea along with other waste products and excess water, to be expelled through ureters, and out of the body through the urethra, in the form of urine.
There are two kidneys in the human body, though a person can typically live with one. They are located just underneath the ribs, on either side of the middle back. The kidneys process about 180 litres of blood every single day through about a million filtering units known as nephrons. Most of this matter returns to the bloodstream, and about 1.5 litres are expelled from the body as urine each day.
Types of Urinary System Disorders
Depending on the individual and the organs affected, urinary system disorders may be mild to life-threatening. Individuals may inherit a predisposition towards a certain disorder, or environmental and other circumstantial factors may influence the development of a disease.
In some cases, a sudden traumatic event such as a motor vehicle accident may cause damage to the body’s urinary system. Recovery will depend on a range of circumstances, including the context of the injuring event, and the injured individual’s general health status.
Examples of urinary system disorders include:
- Kidney stones
- Kidney failure
- Nephrotic disorder
- Incontinence
- Bladder infection
- And more
Some urinary system disorders may resolve with treatment and time, while others may require ongoing medical attention for the rest of an individual’s life. This may force a person to take time away from work, which can have profound implications for their financial security.
Financial stress can have profoundly adverse effects on a person’s health. Studies have been done on the effects of chronic psychological stress on lower urinary tract function. Research into the relationship between stress and the kidney reveals significant links between prolonged release of glucocorticoids (stress hormones) and damage to kidney function.
