Muscular System Disorders and Long-Term Disability Benefits in Canada

Muscles are soft tissues made of stretchy fibres that relax and contract, powering movement in the body. Muscles can perform many different functions, from lifting weights to pumping blood, powering digestion, and more.

Issues related to the muscular system can have profound impacts on the quality and course of a person’s life. Muscular system disorders may be caused or exacerbated by workplace conditions, incidents such as motor vehicle accidents or slip and falls, or more.

Long-term disability benefits are intended to provide financial support for individuals unable to work as a result of their conditions. Whether you are looking for assistance in applying for long-term disability, or if your long-term disability claim has been denied, our team at Preszler Injury Lawyers may be able to help. What Is the Muscular System?

The muscular system is the system of more than 600 muscles in the human body. There are three types of muscle: smooth, skeletal, and cardiac.

Smooth muscle can be found throughout the digestive tract, powering the movement of organs such as the stomach and intestines.

Skeletal muscle attaches to bones, and is responsible for the movement of body parts. These are often the kinds of muscles we think about in the context of exercise: biceps, abdominal muscles, hamstrings.

Cardiac muscle makes up the walls of the heart, and is responsible for keeping blood pumping through our bodies.

Types of Muscular System Disorders

Many different kinds of disorders can affect the muscular system. Some are genetic, while others are acquired. A personal injury accident such as a car collision can cause sprains, strains, or tears to the muscle tissue. Adverse conditions at work may aggravate the impacts of an existing condition, such as muscular dystrophy.

As with any bodily system, muscles are interconnected with other organs and tissues, and most muscular system disorders are also disorders of a related system. For example, neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) affect neurons (part of the nervous system) that innervate muscle. Musculoskeletal conditions affect the locomotor system, which includes muscles as well as joints, bones, tendons and nerves.

Some conditions, such as breaks or fractures, are short-lived, and may resolve with time and treatment. Other conditions, such as ALS, are degenerative, and gradually worsen over time.

There are hundreds of muscular system disorders. Examples include:

  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Amyotriphic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Sarcopenia
  • Hernias
  • Herniated discs
  • Meniscus tears
  • Sprains, strains and tears
  • Overuse Injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder
  • Malignant hyperthermia
  • And more

Long-Term Disability Coverage for Muscular System Disorders

If you or someone you love is affected by a muscular system disorder, there may be financial support available through long-term disability (LTD) benefits. Intended to provide assistance to individuals who are unable to work as a result of their conditions, LTD benefits may replace up to 60-70% of a person’s income.

If your muscular system disorder was caused at or because of work, or if your condition prevents you from being able to work, you may be eligible for worker’s compensation. Disabled individuals qualifying for the Ontario disability support program may be able to receive financial support towards housing, food, and other necessities.
